H. John Downin, age 62 of 2491 Jay Circle Greenville, North Carolina and formerly of Greencastle, Pa. died unexpectedly at 4:00 P.M. Thursday, April 30, 2009 in the Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.
Born August 29, 1946 in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of the late Harry Walter and Joyce Elaine (Gardner) Downin.

John had retired after 41 years employment with Sprint and Embarq and was currently working for Nokia-Siemens in Greenville. He was a life member and past commander of the Harry D. Zeigler V.F.W. Post # 6319 and a member of the Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion Post # 373, both of Greencastle.
John also was a member of the Mount Pisgah Lodge #443 F. & A.M. of Greencastle and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Greencastle.
He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the Vietnam War and was a 1964 graduate of Greencastle-Antrim High School.

He and his wife, Noreen K. (Kendall) Downin were married December 28, 1996 in Greencastle.

Surviving family in addition to his wife are one daughter, Monica S. (Wife of Keith) Eshleman, Greencastle, two sons, Harry J. Downin II and significant other Lisa Moore, Greencastle, Richard W. Downin and fiancee Tiffany Richmond, Greencastle, step-son, Christopher E. Russell and fiancee Amy Farmer, Greenville, N.C., three brothers, Ronald Downin, resident of Quincy Retirement Home, Doug Downin, Waynesboro, Pa., Timothy Downin, Salisbury, Md., two sisters, Sandy Branch, Hagerstown, Md., Angie Lease, Waynesboro, Pa. and two granddaughters Caitlin Eshleman and Hannah Downin.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter Amanda Jo "Mandy" Downin Downey on December 13, 1998.

There will be no public viewing per his request but the family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6 - 8 P.M. at the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle where the Greencastle V.F.W. will hold a memorial service at 7:30 P.M. and the Mt. Pisgah Lodge will hold Masonic service at 8:00 P.M. Interment with military honors provided by the Chambersburg V.F.W. Post #1599 Honor Guard will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery Greencastle at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Mandy Downin Scholarship Fund C/O Monica Eshleman 87 Orchard Circle Greencastle, Pa. 17225.
