Gladys O. McCrae, age 95, of Greencastle, PA, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at Chambers Pointe Health Care Center. Born in Antrim Township, PA, on December 26, 1929, she was the daughter of the late William H. and Bertha M. Snyder Oaks.
A 1947 graduate of Greencastle Antrim High School, Mrs. McCrae made everyone feel like the most important person in the room. Her radiant smile, genuine love for others, and thoughtfulness made her homes —from South Washington Street in Greencastle to various assisted living facilities—revolving doors for family and friends from all walks of life.
She was a homemaker most of her adult life, with a love and gift for gardening that always yielded a bounty of fresh flowers and vegetables. She and her husband, LeRoy, owned and operated the former Green Point Snack Bar (home of the Big G), where countless young people learned from and felt valued by them. She enjoyed sewing, singing in choirs, Old Home Week, being outdoors and the Lord. She savored the holy Scripture and memorized it her entire life.
Mrs. McCrae was a member of Grace Bible Church and served in the Camp Joy El kitchen and with their Released Time Bible program since 1973, impacting generations of children. She delighted in hearing updates about how God was working through Joy El and through global missions all the days of her life. When her health limited her body, it did not limit her witness for her Lord Jesus. Even to her final moments, she was sharing the love of Christ with all around her, helping a young friend begin a relationship with Jesus within Mrs. McCrae’s final months of life.
She was the last of her immediate family, survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy D. McCrae, in 2018, and three brothers, Harold, Kenneth, and Fred Oaks, and a sister, Edna Statler.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at 11 AM in the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Inc., 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, PA 17225, where Pastor Dave Mummert will officiate. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service in the funeral home. Interment will follow the service in Cedar Hill Cemetery. If desired, memorial contributions may be made in her name to Camp Joy El, 3741 Joy El Drive, Greencastle, PA 17225, or to Grace Bible Church, 2327 Hoffman Rd., Greencastle, PA 17225.
