Gladys (Burton) Burns, age 91, a resident of Greencastle, PA, passed away at 6:04 P.M. Tuesday, November, 22, 2011 in the Gettysburg Hospital. She was born the daughter of Charles and Gertrude (Hinman) Burton on May 9, 1920, in Cumberland, Maryland. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Charles Oliver "Jack" Burns, Jr. on February 29, 2000. She is survived by three children: Carol Burns (husband James Hammerberg) of Santa Fe, NM, John Burns (wife Karen) of Gettysburg, PA, and Steve Burns (wife Ann) of Greencastle, PA; five grandchildren, Andrea (husband Todd Culter), Matt, Emily, Anna, and Charles Burns.

During World War II Gladys worked for Allegheny Ballistics Lab in Cumberland, MD. She and her husband Jack, who was a Naval officer, moved to Greencastle, PA after the war. They lived in Greencastle for several years before moving to Princess Anne, Maryland in the early 1950''s. After her three children were in school, Gladys went to work for NASA at Wallops Island, VA as an executive secretary. She and her husband subsequently moved to the Baltimore/Washington area where Gladys continued her employment with NASA at the Goddard Space Flight Center. Gladys and Jack retired to Greencastle, PA in 1978 where they were both active in the community.

After retirement Gladys attended the Pennsylvania State University at Mont Alto, PA where she earned an Associate Degree in the College of Business Administration. She was one of the first students to attend as part of the university''s "Go-60" program. She and her husband Jack were avid nature lovers and traveled extensively throughout the US and Canada.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 29 at 10:00 A.M. from the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, 45 South Carlisle St., Greencastle, PA with Pastor Taylor Camerer officiating. Burial will take place in the Hyndman Cemetery in Hyndman, PA on Tuesday at 1:30 P.M. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday evening from 5 - 7 P.M. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to the Sierra Club Pennsylvania Chapter, P.O.
