Gerald E. Sheffler

Gerald Eugene Sheffler, age 84 a resident of Hughesville, MD and formerly of Greencastle, PA left this earth to be with the Lord on Monday December 10, 2012.

Born April 11, 1928 in Waynesboro, PA, he was the son of the late Elizabeth M. Sheffler. He married his loving, devoted wife Grace "Marie" (Barnhart) Sheffler on March 17, 1950.

Mr. Sheffler served as a member of the National Guard, the Army and retired as a Navy veteran of 24 years serving proudly in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. During his military tenure he was stationed all over the world and aboard ship often in war zones. His dedication to service was as an infantryman, a hospital corpsman serving wounded on the battlefield and in hospitals and later becoming an optical instructor and optician. After military retirement, he continued his career as an optician in Chambersburg and later in Waldorf, MD.

Gerald was a life member and a past commander of the Harry D. Zeigler V.F.W. Post #6319 of Greencastle, member of the American Legion, member of the Elks Lodge and a member of the FRA (Fleet Reserve Association). In earlier years he enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing. He had a wonderful sense of humor, a terrific memory and a gift of helping those less fortunate. We have been blessed by the time we have spent with him and his presence will truly be missed.
