George Frederick Gearhart, age 69 of 3365 Buchanan Trail West Greencastle, Pa. died unexpectedly at 9:32 P.M. Wednesday November 25, 2009 in the emergency room of the Waynesboro Hospital.
Born May 28, 1940 in Bellefonte, Pa., he was the son of Ruth M. (Mothersbaugh) Gearhart of Boalsburg, Pa. and the late Charles W. Gearhart.
He was a retired teacher with the Franklin County Career and Technology Center of Chambersburg having taught sheet metal and plumbing. In his earlier years he was employed by Penn State University in State College.
George was a 1958 graduate of State College High School and Penn State University. He was a member of the Iota Lambda Sigma Fraternity and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
George was a member of the St. John''s United Church Of Christ of Boalsburg and more recently attended the Greencastle Baptist Church. He was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary (Flotilla #56) of Chambersburg, post member of the Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion Post #373 and a social member of the Harry D. Zeigler V.F.W. Post #6319, both of Greencastle.
He was a member of the Pennsylvania State Teachers Association and the local Skills U.S.A. (formerly VICA) program.
He and his wife, Bernice K. (Dry) Gearhart were married August 21, 1970 in Boalsburg.
Surviving family in addition to his wife and mother are two daughters Carranda M. (Gearhart) Barkdoll and Deanna R. (Gearhart) Bowers, both of Greencastle, one son, William F. Gearhart, Port Matilda, Pa., five grandchildren, Aaron, Derrick, Shane, Joshua, Mason and one brother Charles Gearhart, Centre Hall, Pa.
A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday December 5, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. from the Greencastle Baptist Church 2377 Buchanan Trail West Greencastle. Military honors will be provided following the service. There will be no viewing but the family will receive friends at church on Saturday from noon - 2:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Antietam Humane Society 8513 Lyons Rd. Waynesboro, Pa. 17268 or to the United States Navy Memorial Foundation 701 Pennsylvania Ave. N.W., Suite 123 Washington D.C. 20004-2608. Arrangements were handled by the Harold M.
