Fred Leroy Oaks

Fred Leroy Oaks, 89, of Greencastle, PA, a farmer and Oaks Motel owner-operator, died October 10, 2012 at Manor Care in Chambersburg, PA.  He was born one mile east of Greencastle on January 10, 1923, son of the late William and Bertha (Snyder) Oaks.

He attended Brown's Mill Consolidated School from 1928-1936 and graduated from Greencastle High School in 1940.
In Greencastle he attended the United Methodist Church, Calvary Bible Church, and the Evangelical Lutheran Church.

He worked the Oaks farms all of his life and in 1955 he opened the Oaks Motel.  He and his wife operated the motel for 30 years.  During that time he was a member of the Franklin County Tourist Council, two times President of the Greencastle Chamber of Commerce, President of the Greencastle Rotary Club, on the board of directors for Greencastle Area Development Corporation for fifteen years, secretary of the Franklin County Planning Commission for twelve years, secretary of the Greencastle Bicentennial in 1982, Old Home Week Vice-President for 15 years, Old Home Week Secretary in 1980 and 1986 and Old Home Week President in 1989.

He is survived by his wife, Frances (Wolfe) Oaks, one daughter, Sharon O. Stevens of Southern Maryland; two grandsons Brian Brook Stevens and Shawn Oaks Stevens; two great- grandchildren Braeden and Baylee Stevens; one sister Mrs. Gladys McCrae, as well as a number of nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were made by Zimmerman Funeral Home of Greencastle and graveside services were held October 13, 2012 at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Greencastle.
