Frank A. Bittner, age 89 of Waynesboro, PA died at 6:45 AM Sunday, March 26, 2017 at Quincy Village.

Born March 26, 1928 in Greencastle, PA, he was the son of the late J. Clyde Bittner Sr. and Louise (Cook) Bittner. He was a member of the Greencastle High School Class of 1946.

He and Shirley (Snyder) Bittner were married on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 1951. They enjoyed 63 years together before Shirley passed away on November 20, 2014. Mr. Bittner retired in 1990 after 38 years of employment with the Landis Tool Company of Waynesboro as draftsman, training supervisor and product liability officer.

He was a council member, teacher, audio visual assistant and usher of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Waynesboro.

Mr. Bittner was a past president of the Southern Engineering Society of Hagerstown, MD, past president of Landis Tool Company’s LATCO Foremen’s Club, a member of the Harry D. Zeigler V.F.W. Post # 6319 of Greencastle, member of the Joseph Stickell American Legion Post # 15 of Waynesboro, BPOE of Waynesboro, a former design committee member of Downtown Mainstreet Inc. and a volunteer and member of the Waynesboro Industrial Museum of Waynesboro.

He served with the US Navy during World War II aboard the repair ship USS Hector AR7 visiting islands in the Pacific and mainland China. While attending Penn State University, he was recalled as a reservist during the Korean War to serve in the Atlantic aboard the destroyer escort Robert F. Keller, DE 419.

An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Bittner enjoyed camping, hiking, fishing, hunting and traveling.

Surviving family are two daughters, Leslie McEntire and husband Randy, Alison Stine and husband Scott, all of Waynesboro, one grandson Tyler Stine, one granddaughter, Leslie Stine, two great-grandsons, Gavin and Maddox Stine, sons of Tyler and Monica Stine.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, J. Clyde Bittner Jr., Edwin C. Bittner Sr. and one sister Janet L. Bittner.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 30 at 10:30 AM at the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle with Rev. Dennis Beaver officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Chambersburg V.F.W. Post # 1599 Honor Guard will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery Greencastle. There will be no public viewing but the family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Lupus Foundation of America Inc., National Office, 2000 L Street N.W. Suite 710, Washington DC 20036.
