Eugene S. "Biggie" Goetz, age 88 of 212 Orchard Circle, Greencastle, PA died at 8:16 P.M. Tuesday, October 13, 2009 in the Chambersburg Hospital.

Born August 15, 1921 in Harrisburg, PA, he was the son of the late George H. Goetz and Margaret (Stover) Goetz Elliott.

He and his wife of 68 years, Mildred L. (Dietrich) Goetz were married October 4, 1941 in Hagerstown, MD.

He worked as a mechanic for the former Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown, retiring in 1983. He was a 1939 graduate of the Greencastle High School and attended Aircraft Technical School at Fairchild Aircraft. He was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II serving aboard the USS McGinty in the South Pacific.

Mr. Goetz was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Greencastle where he served on church council and as an usher. He was a Life Member of the Greencastle Rescue Hose Company No. 1 serving in various capacities. He was a Charter Member of the Greencastle Rescue Hose Company No. 1 Ambulance Squad where he was Secretary Lieutenant for over 25 years. He sang in the chorus for the Greencastle Rescue Hose Company annual Minstrel Show from 1952 through 2008. He was Post Member and a Past Commander from 1956-57 of the Harry D. Ziegler VFW Post 6319, Greencastle. He was a member of the Greencastle-Antrim Senior Men''s Club and the Cumberland Valley Chapter of National Railroad Historical Society. He was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels in the Greencastle Area. Mr. Goetz served on the Greencastle-Antrim School District School Board. He enjoyed woodworking, traveling and spending time with his family.

Surviving family in addition to his wife are, four daughters, Barbara L. (Wife of Ronald L.) Nicarry, Beverly J. (Wife of Roger L.) Bitner both of Greencastle, Deborah J. (Wife of Ricky L.) Lynn of Hagerstown and Carole L. (Wife of James A.) Sutch of Sharpsburg. Eight grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a grandson Kirk A. Bitner; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Fox and his step-father, Daniel W. Elliott.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 16th at 11:00 A.M. from the Evangelical Lutheran Church, 130 N. Washington St., Greencastle with Revs. Martin H. Horn and Donald M. Bohn officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Chambersburg VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 P.M. at the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. The Greencastle VFW Post 6319 will hold a memorial service at 7:30 P.M. on Thursday evening at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Memorial Fund of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, 130 N. Washington St., Greencastle, PA 17225.
