Ethel E. Rathbone

Ethel E. Rathbone went home to the Lord peacefully on Monday, July 2, 2012 at the home of her son, Thomas and daughter-in-law, Lola in Milford, NY after a prolonged battle with cancer.

She was born to Aaron and Leila Hartle Myers in State Line, PA on June 6, 1922 in the house in which she lived most of her 90 years. She married the love of her life, Ira Carhart Rathbone, on July 4, 1946. He predeceased her December 6, 2008. She is also predeceased by her beloved sisters Emma Myers Brumbaugh and Helen Myers Rowland. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, a sister, Edna Myers Kershner and brother-in-law Walter Kershner of State Line.

Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren Olivia Rathbone of Freestone, CA, Isaac Rathbone of Brooklyn, NY, Miriam Rathbone Murray of Cooperstown, NY and Hannah Rathbone Martens of Dansville, NY, and five great-grandchildren.

Ethel graduated from Greencastle High School with the Class of 1940 and attended her 70th reunion in 2010. She graduated from Hagerstown Business College and worked for Fairchild Hiller during World War II where she received the "Army Navy E". She later worked for the US Postal Service and she retired from the Greencastle Antrim School District as a reading aide.

She was a lifelong member of Trinity United Church of Christ where she was active in the Willing Workers. She was also a member of the State Line Ruritan Ladies'' Auxiliary. She will always be remembered for her good cheer and steadfast faith.

A special thanks to her neighbors and church family who brought joy to her life especially in later years. On her 90th birthday she received over 50 cards from well wishers even though she was hundreds of miles away.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 7 at 10:00 AM from the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle with the Rev. Ed Higginbottom officiating.
