Esther L. (Strite) Showalter

Esther (Strite) Showalter went to be with her Savior early on the morning of November 15, 2022. She had been a resident of Menno Haven in Chambersburg, PA since 2009.

Born in Hagerstown, MD, she was the daughter of the late Amos W. and Gladys (Shafer) Strite.  She was united in marriage with Elmer Showalter in 1974.

Earlier in her life she served as a nursing assistant and later through night school, earned her Practical Nursing License (LPN) while continuing to work at Washington County Hospital.  After her marriage to Elmer she became a homemaker and was active in the sewing circle at the Salem Ridge Mennonite Church, where she was a member, and later enjoyed quilting at the Cumberland Valley Relief Center. During their retired years, Elmer and Esther enjoyed serving with the Mennonite Disaster Service in South Carolina, Georgia and other areas.

She is survived by two step-daughters: Diane Martin and husband Larry, Debra Dill and husband Blair, two step-sons Earl and wife Sue, and Lynn and wife Jeanette. Eleven grandchildren: Larrian, Karla, Janelle, Kristin, David, Heather, Ryan, Marissa, Alicia, Ingrid and Grant and fifteen great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Esther was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Elmer, her sister Miriam Eby and five brothers C. Merle Strite, Amos Strite Jr., Harold Strite, Walter Strite and Glenn Strite.

A celebration of life will be held at the Salem Ridge Community Church, 441 Pensinger Road, Greencastle, PA 17225 on Tuesday, December 27, 2022 at 2 PM. The internment will be private.
