Ernest “Ernie” Merle Young
Ernest “Ernie” Merle Young, age 86 of Greencastle, PA passed away on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at the Williamsport Retirement Village in Williamsport, MD.
Ernest was born on July 28, 1929 in Everett, PA, he was the son of the late Earl C. and Rosa (Spade) Young. He and his late wife of 62 years, Mary Elizabeth (Burke) Young were married on June 18, 1950 in Somerset, PA. She died on June 21, 2012.
Ernest “Ernie” worked as a coal miner, later he worked at Fairchild in the photography department and then he worked for Potomac Edison as a lineman. He retired from Potomac Edison in Hagerstown, MD.
He was a 32nd degree mason and was a member of the Antietam Lodge No. 197 AF & AM of Keedysville, MD. Ernie also was a member of the Tall Cedars Lebanon Hagerstown Forest No. 95, member of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Maryland, member of the Palestine Council No. 16 R & SM, Hagerstown, a member of the Ithiel Royal Arch Chapter No. 27 of Hagerstown, member of The Fore Runners Club and a member of the Waynesboro Fish And Game Club.
He graduated from Everett High School and he enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family and friends.
Surviving family are one son Ernest M. Young Jr. and wife Mary of Fairplay, MD; two daughters, Cynthia “Cindy” Young of Greencastle, PA, Sharon Quinn and husband Bo of Boonsboro, MD; one step-grandson Darryle Moore and wife Cindy; two step-great- grandchildren; two brothers Raymond Young and Harold Young, one sister Ruth Chamberlain, all of Breezewood, PA and several nieces, nephews and friends. Ernie’s sense of humor brightened all of our lives and we will always carry his memory in our hearts.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by brothers John Young, Earl Young, Charles Young and sisters Emma Beegle, Dorothy Ensley, Sara North and Evelyn Beegle.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday June 4 at 11:00 AM at the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle, PA with Rev. Gayle Ruble Sr. officiating. Burial will be in the Macedonia United Brethren Church Cemetery near Greencastle. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.
