Edwin C. "Ed" Bittner Sr., age 89 of 343 West Baltimore St. Greencastle died at 12:15 P.M. Tuesday February 9, 2010 in the home of his son and daughter in law Joel and Jody Bittner of Greencastle.
Born February 14, 1920 in Shady Grove, Pa. he was the son of the late John Clyde Sr. and Louise (Cook) Bittner.
In his earlier years he worked at the former Landis Tool Co., he then worked with his father-in-law at the Copenhaver and Bittner Meat Store and then was employed as Greencastle Borough Secretary from 1962 till he retired in 1985. Ed was past president and member of the Greencastle Borough Council, served as zoning and tax officer and utilities manager. In 1990, the Walter Ave. bridge was renamed the Edwin C. Bittner Bridge in honor of his years of service to Greencastle.
He was a 1937 graduate of Greencastle High School and was a World War II veteran serving as a master sergeant in the U.S. Army. Ed was member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Greencastle, life member of the Rescue Hose Co. No. 1, post member of the Harry D. Ziegler V.F.W. Post #6319, post member of Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion Post #373, all of Greencastle. He also was a member of the Greencastle Sportsman Association. He enjoyed taking pictures, watching wildlife, going to Hardees each morning, e-mailing his friends and especially spending time with his family.
He and his wife, Iona Mae (Copenhaver) Bittner were married June 22, 1946. She died on October 9, 1994.
Surviving family are two daughters, Nancy J. Kraker, Bath, Ohio, Tina L. (Husband Daryl) Reese, Greencastle, two sons Dr. Edwin C. Bittner Jr., Torrington, Wyoming, Joel G. (Wife Jody) Bittner, Greencastle, one brother Frank A. Bittner, Waynesboro, Pa., nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by a brother J. Clyde Bittner Jr. and a sister Janet L. Bittner.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday February 13 at 2:00 P.M. from the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle with the Rev. Martin H. Horn officiating. Burial will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery Greencastle with graveside military honors provided by the Chambersburg V.F.W. Post Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from noon till 2 P.M. The family requests that flowers be omitted and memorial contributions be given in his memory to the Jerome King Playground Association P.O. Box 2 Greencastle, Pa. 17225.
