Edgar L. Burkholder Chambersburg PA passed away peacefully at home after suffering a stroke on August 17, 2023, with family at his side. He was born September 22, 1930, in Hagerstown, MD, the son of Edgar H., and Hannah Martin Burkholder. He and his wife A. Grace Lehman were married on May 16, 1953. They celebrated 70 years of marriage this year.
Edgar was a dairy farmer for 31 years. He farmed in Hagerstown, MD, Williamson and later purchased a farm near Chambersburg. After retiring from farming, he owned and operated Burkholder’s Water Service for almost 25 years. At the age of 50, he obtained his GED and was pleased with that accomplishment. Edgar was a member of Pleasant View Mennonite Church in Chambersburg.
After retiring, he enjoyed volunteering at the Cumberland Valley Relief Center making soap for Mennonite Central Committee. In addition to that, he volunteered at New Life Thrift Store until his death. He also enjoyed tinkering with anything mechanical.
He is survived by his wife, A. Grace Burkholder and children, Isaac and Mark (wife Joyce) of Chambersburg, Royce (wife Sara) of Lititz, Dorcas Preheim (husband Arlan) and Carl Edgar (wife Nancy) of Lancaster, and Miriam Burkholder (husband Erik Nyquist) of San Antonio, TX. He is survived by 8 grandchildren, Nathaniel, Stephen, and Curtis Burkholder and Jonathan Preheim, Anita Zeiset, Katie Nolt, Julie Sensenig and Janel Preheim. In addition, he is survived by 11 great grandchildren Annika, Kiara, Josiah, and Kayliana Burkholder, Ariana, Derek, Kayla, Olivia, and Sophia Zeiset, and Caleb and Micah Sensenig.
He is survived by his siblings, Ruth Burkholder Diller of Greencastle and Chester of Hagerstown, MD. He was preceded in death by siblings Martin, Jacob, Mary Martin, Emma Eby, Irvin, Earl, Fannie Diller, and Paul. In addition, he was preceded in death by daughter in law Rosanna (Isaac) Burkholder and grandson Andrew Burkholder.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, August 21, 2023 at the Pleasant View Mennonite Church, 346 Warm Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202. Rev. Eric Lehman will officiate. Interment will follow the service in the adjoining church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church Sunday evening from 5:00 – 8:00 PM and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
