Earl R. Piper, age 75 of 11822 Stull Rd. Greencastle, PA. died unexpectedly at 1:10 A.M. Sunday, February 20, 2011 in the Waynesboro Hospital.
Born October 20, 1935 in Duffield, PA., he was the son of the late Truman and Dessie Irene (Mayhugh) Piper.
His first wife, Doris J. (Zeger) Piper died on December 13, 1989. He was employed for many years at the Eagle Construction Co. of Greencastle and had been currently working for David H. Martin Excavating Co. of Chambersburg. Earl was a member of the Hollowell Brethren In Christ Church near Waynesboro where he was active in Sunday School having served as a teacher, he served as a church deacon and was project manager for the recent chapel renovations.
He was a former member of the Shady Grove Ruritan Club and coached numerous baseball teams over the years. Earl played minor league baseball for the Philadelphia Phillies organization. He enjoyed rose gardening, woodworking and was an avid golfer. Earl was a 1953 graduate of Greencastle High School.
He married Violet L. (Frederick) Hummer Piper on February 9, 1991.
Surviving in addition to his wife are one daughter Deborah L. DeShong and husband Donald, Greencastle, four sons Richard L. Piper and wife Pamela, Terry E. Piper and wife Jenny, Timothy A. Piper and wife Barbara, all of Greencastle, Dennis R. Piper and Heidi, Hagerstown, MD., one brother Carl E. Piper, Greencastle, two sisters, Mary Vanhorn and Nancy Rife, both of Chambersburg, two stepchildren, Robin Lee Hummer and Ric Hummer, both of Waynesboro, eleven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and five step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister Alma June Martin, two brothers William Piper, Donald Piper and by a step-granddaughter Amy M. Hummer.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday February 24 at 10:00 A.M. from the Hollowell Brethren In Christ Church Worship Center 14807 Hollowell Church Rd. Waynesboro with Rev. Blaine Lougheed officiating. Burial will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery Greencastle. The family will receive friends in the chapel of the Hollowell Brethren In Christ Church on Wednesday evening from 5 - 8 P.M. and in the church one hour before the service on Thursday. Memorial contributions may be given in his memory to the Building Fund of Hollowell Brethren In Christ Church 14807 Hollowell Church Rd. Waynesboro, Pa. 17268 or to Spring Of Hope Prayer Counseling Ministries 230 South Potomac St. Suite C Waynesboro, PA. 17268. Arrangements were handled by the Harold M.
