Dorothy M. (Williams) Whitmore, 96, died on Friday, January 5, 2018 in the Chambersburg Hospital. Dorothy was born in Greencastle, PA on October 20, 1921 to Melanchton Santee Williams and Lucy Humelsine Williams. She graduated from Greencastle High School in 1939. After graduation and during World War II, Dorothy was employed as secretary to the Chief Engineer at Fairchild, Hagerstown MD.
Dorothy married Bernard C. Whitmore on August 22, 1943 in York, PA. She was a homemaker and worked part-time as a secretary/bookkeeper for several employers in the Greencastle area.
Dorothy was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Greencastle where she was active in the Women’s Group, taught primary age children in Sunday School, sang with the choir, and served as church secretary. Dorothy was also a member of the Greencastle-Antrim Loyal Daughters.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and four siblings: Orville Williams, Pauline Rinehart, Isabelle Hartman, and G. Margaretta Williams. She is survived by her husband of 74 years, Bernard, and their three children, Rita (Bill) Beck, Robert Whitmore, and Betty (Ken) Jackson. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Tami, Josh, Laura, Jennifer, and Pamela and seven great-grandchildren: Hailey, Levi, Brooke, Dylan, Emily, Sam, and Sophia. Additionally, Dorothy is survived by her youngest sister, Janet Williams.
Family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 PM at the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 South Carlisle Street Greencastle, PA. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at 11:00 in the Evangelical Lutheran Church, 130 North Washington Street, Greencastle, PA. with Rev. Martin Horn officiating. Burial in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Greencastle will be at the convenience of the family.
