Dorothy Marie (Jackson) Reed, 95, of Greencastle, PA passed away Sunday, January 12, 2025 at Williamsport Retirement Village, Twin Oaks Assisted Living, Williamsport, MD. Born November 1, 1929, in Baltimore, MD she was the daughter of the late Thomas Howard Jackson, Jr. and Henrietta Marie (Oyeman) Jackson.
She was a graduate of Eastern High School with the Class of 1947. Throughout her career, Dorothy worked in various positions including sales, marketing, and administration. She was an advocate of continuous learning and loved teaching. She taught roller skating and weaving but her true passion was genealogy. She taught genealogy at Hagerstown Community College for almost 20 years. She found great joy in teaching others how to study their family history. She loved to travel and visited more than 30 countries. She was a member of and served in leadership positions for First Church Greencastle (formerly First United Methodist Church), Mid-Atlantic Germanic Society, Maryland Genealogical Society and Washington County Historical Society.
She is survived by six children, G. Michael Reed (Pam) of San Luis Obispo, CA, Susan Marie Stevens of Charleston, SC, Abigail Dill (Greg) of Metairie, LA, Eric Gage Reed (Stacy) of Aviano, Italy, John Mark Reed (Myoung) of Colorado Springs, CO, and Richard Scott Reed (Sherry) of Murrells Inlet, SC; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a sister, Miriam E. Bolling (David) of Middletown, MD; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Proctor Reed, Jr. and a brother, T. Howard Jackson, III.
The Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, February 21 at 3:00 pm at Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle Street, Greencastle, PA 17225 with Rev. Dr. Robert Cook Officiating. Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Church Greencastle, Washington County Historical Society, or Hospice of Washington County. Special thanks to the staff of Williamsport Retirement Village and Hospice of Washington County for providing special care, love and compassion to Dorothy during her journey.
