Doris M. “Dody” Clever
Doris M. “Dody” Clever, age 82 of Greencastle, PA died at 12:22 AM Wednesday, February 25, 2015 in ManorCare Health Services of Chambersburg where she had resided briefly.
Born December 13, 1932 in Bedford, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Samuel H. and Pearl Irene (Gilson) Ickes.
She married Russell H. “Russ” Clever on January 9, 1960. He died on November 23, 2013. She and her husband owned the former Carvel Ice Cream franchise in the South Gate Mall Chambersburg for 10 years. She worked as a part-time reporter for the Echo-Pilot newspaper and then worked at the former Comfort Inn of Greencastle where she retired in 2001 as the hotel general manager.
Dody volunteered with the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Greencastle, served as a belsnickler for the downtown Heritage Christmas program, served with the Rescue Hose Co.’s Annual Minstrel Show on the costume and backdrop committees and sang in the chorus.
Dody along with husband Russ was very active in the Greencastle Old Home Week for more than 30 years with Dody chairing and writing the Old Home Pageant for more than 20 years and she also sang in the pageant chorus and cantata. Along with her husband, they gave many performances with his musical comedy group Two Nuts & A Bolt
Dody enjoyed bowling and was a member of a local bowling league for years, playing 500 with the card club, a member of the Red Hat Society, member of the Rescue Hose Co. # 1 and a member the auxiliaries of the Greencastle V.F.W Post #6319 and Greencastle American Legion Post #373. She and her husband Russ were proud recipients of the James P. Oliver Outstanding Citizenship Award in 2009 given by the Greencastle Chamber Of Commerce.
She attended the Trinity Lutheran Church of Greencastle, was a member of the Greencastle-Antrim Loyal Daughters, she served on the Greencastle Civil Service Commission and had attended the Chambersburg High School.
Surviving family are one son Alfred “Huck” Monn of Chambersburg, one daughter Deborah I. Librandi of Harrisburg, PA, seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and expecting a fourth one soon and one sister Betty Balestrieri of Port Ritchey, FL.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one brother Robert Ickes and a sister Ruth Pheil.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 2 at 1:00 PM from the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle with Rev. Martin H. Horn officiating. Burial will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery Greencastle. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening from 6:00 8:00 P.M.
