Mr. David Shannon Hopkins, 38, of Chambersburg, died Saturday, September 1, 2012, in Haiti. He was working under ASID, Thorcon, to build homes for the Haitian people.

Born March 30, 1974, in Hagerstown, he was a son of Mrs. Linda Jay Ridgeway Butterfield of Vassalboro, Maine, and the late Terry Lee Hopkins.

Since 2002, David was a partner with his older brother in Gold Dog Wood Company, a custom millwork business located in Chambersburg; and in 2008 began working with overseas construction.

Surviving besides his mother are his brothers, Gregory Scot Hopkins of Fort Loudon, and M. Shawn Hopkins and wife Wendy of Chambersburg; his nephew and niece, Corbin and Jadyn Hopkins; paternal grandfather Lee Hopkins of Mercersburg; and maternal grandmother Jessie Oden of Hagerstown; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Besides his father, David was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather William (Bill) Oden.

The family will receive friends at Harold M. Zimmerman & Son Funeral Home, 45 South Carlisle Street, Greencastle, Saturday, September 15, from 9:30 to 11:00 AM. The funeral service will begin at the funeral home on Saturday at 11:00 AM. The Rev. Ronald K. Strader will officiate. Interment will be in Macedonia United Brethren Church Cemetery, Greencastle. In lieu flowers, memorial contributions be given in his memory to the National Institutes of Health 9000 Rockville Pike Bethesda, MD 20892

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Heart, Lung & Blood Institute at National Institute of Health. The check may be made to NHLBI and sent in care of the Director''s Office, 31 Center Drive, Building 31 Room 5A48, Bethesda, Maryland 20892. Please be sure to indicate that the donation is made in memory of David S. Hopkins.
