Rev. Clarence H. Showalter
Rev. Clarence H. Showalter, age 95 a resident of Williamsport Nursing Home in Williamsport, MD since December 31, 2014 died Saturday morning October 1, 2016 at the nursing home.
Born March 13, 1921 in Maugansville, MD, he was the son of the late Martin W. and Katie (Reiff) Showalter.
In his earlier years he worked with his family on their Eden Plains Dairy Farms, (M.W. Showalter & Sons) delivering milk in the Hagerstown area; they also attended the Hagerstown City Market. After the dairy was sold in 1961, Clarence worked at Mack Trucks of Hagerstown until he retired in 1984.
In retirement, he pursued many hobbies such as raising many different kind of animals, cane carving, grafting nut and fruit trees, etc. Clarence was an avid reader. Recently a local author and family friend, Stephen Lynn Meyers, has written a book on Clarence’s life entitled Growin’ Up Country. The book is available from his family.
Clarence married the late Anna Ruth (Ryder) Showalter on December 25, 1944. She died on May 20, 2005. Clarence was an ordained minister serving at Shanks Church of the Brethren of Greencastle for over 50 years. He also held many revival services over the years in neighboring churches.
Surviving family includes two sons, Ronald (wife Marie Cassel) Showalter, William (wife Linda Miller) Showalter, all of Hagerstown, seven grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were brothers Laban Showalter, Elmer Showalter and a sister Iva Grove.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday October 6 at 2:00 PM at the Shanks Church of the Brethren near Greencastle with the church ministers officiating. Burial will be in the adjacent church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle and at the church one hour before the service on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be given in his memory to The Gideons International, P.O.
