Cheryl Koons Winger, 83, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at Sterling Care South Mountain Nursing Home. Cheryl was born on Dec. 3, 1941, in Hagerstown, to the late George and Helen (Keller) Koons.
Cheryl grew up in Greencastle, PA. She was the valedictorian of the Greencastle-Antrim High School’s class of 1960. She earned both a bachelor’s and master's degree from Shippensburg University. She married her high school sweetheart, John David Winger on Aug. 8, 1964.
Cheryl was a high school English teacher, and worked the majority of her career at her alma-mater, Greencastle-Antrim High School. At various times during her career she served as English Department Chair, Yearbook Advisor, and Senior Class Advisor. She enjoyed teaching Shakespeare and incorporated creative activities to engage her students. Cheryl was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Hagerstown. She previously was an active member of Presbyterian Woman and the Ruth Circle. She also served the church as a lay reader, and flower committee member. An enthusiastic volunteer, she was a past president and member of the Conomac Lions Club (Williamsport, Maryland). Cheryl was also a member of the Hagerstown Newcomers Club, and the Cumberland Garden Club. She was a proud band parent volunteer of the Williamsport High School Blue Band.
She is survived by her daughter, Nicole Winger Leimbach and her husband, Rob; four grandchildren: Christina Leimbach, Edward Leimbach, Charles Leimbach, and Andrew Leimbach; a sister, Kathy Koons Rowe (Stephen); a brother, Larry George Koons (Kellie); and Aunt Alma June Hoffman. In addition to her parents, Cheryl was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at 11 a.m. in the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home., Inc., 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, PA 17225, where Pastor David Rawley and Pastor Aaron Rowe (Cheryl’s nephew) will co-officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the funeral home.
