Charles Richard Hess

Charles Richard “Dick” Hess, age 96, of Greencastle, PA, passed away on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at his home. Born May 2, 1928, in Waynesboro, PA, he was the son of the late Floyd R. and Rhea Mae Miller Hess.

Mr. Hess served honorably in the U.S. Air Force 1946-1948 and the U.S. Army 1950-1952. He went on to retire from Letterkenny Army Depot as a Production Worker in 1988. He was a member of the Otterbein United Brethren Church in Greencastle and the Greencastle Sportsman’s Association. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, mushroom hunting, collecting walnuts, and spending time with family.

Surviving is his beloved wife of 67 years, T. Lorraine Warren Hess, whom he married on April 19, 1957; three children, Becky S. Ausherman (husband Jim) of Chambersburg, PA, Steve Hess (wife Lori) of Greencastle, PA, and Julie Martin of Greencastle, PA; seven grandchildren, Heath Ausherman (wife Brittany), Kolby Martin (fiancé Lauren), Cody Ausherman, Hailee Martin, Mindy Coy (husband Brad) , Becky Recter (husband Jason), and Jessica Lashinsky; 10 great-grandchildren; and 2 great great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Randall Richard Hess in 1963 and four siblings, Robert E., Thurman M., and Jacob D. Hess and Beatrice L. Detrich.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at 11 AM at Otterbein United Brethren Church, 146 Leitersburg St., Greencastle, PA 17225, where Pastor David Rawley will officiate. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, from 6 – 8 PM in the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Inc., 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, PA and on Thursday one hour prior to the service in the above church and address. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Otterbein United Brethren Church’s Building Fund, 146 Leitersburg St., Greencastle, PA.
