Catherine H. Long
Catherine H. Long, 95, a resident of Penn Hall at Menno Haven, Chambersburg, and formerly Mercersburg Rd., Greencastle, died Monday, May 7, 2012 at Penn Hall Nursing Center. She was the wife of the late Joseph F. Long, who preceded her in death on April 21, 2006.
Born January 29, 1917 in Greencastle, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Ruth (Kuhn) Haldeman. She graduated Greencastle High School in 1934 and received her degree as a Registered Nurse from St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing, Lancaster, in 1939
In her early years, Catherine was a homemaker. Later she worked as a nurse at Bridgewater College for several years; then for 17 years at the Mercersburg Academy.
She was a long time member of the Welsh Run Church of The Brethren, near Mercersburg, where she was a member of the church''s women''s group and taught the women''s Sunday School Class. Additionally, she volunteered with the library of Shalom Christian School, the Bible Release Program at Camp Joy El, and Hospice.
Catherine was a former member of the Greencastle-Antrim Women''s Fellowship; past president of the former Greencastle AARP; and enjoyed crocheting and quilting. Quilting offered her a great deal of enjoyment, and was an activity that continued after moving to Penn Hall.
Surviving are her children, J. Daniel Long and wife Lois of Greencastle, Paul Edward Long of Lowville, NY, James H. Long and wife Cheryl and Marvin T. Long and wife Linda, all of Greencastle and Verna Ruth Rice and husband Eugene of Waynesboro; as well as sisters Arlene McDaniel of Oklahoma, and Elizabeth Stahl, Greencastle; 22 Grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren; and her daughter-in-law Louise Long Boswell and husband Hank of Hagerstown
Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son Maynard Eugene Long in 1991; grandson Terrance Allen Long in 1997; and three brothers Daniel, Glen and Bruce Haldeman.
The family will receive friends at the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle on Sunday, May 13, from 6 - 8 PM. The funeral service will be held on Monday, May 14, 10:00 AM, from her church, Welsh Run Church of the Brethren, 11420 Welsh Run Rd., Mercersburg, with Revs. C. William "Bill" Spangler and James D. Kent officiating. Interment will be in the adjoining church cemetery.
