Betty Scott Stephey
Betty Scott Stephey (Betsy), age 92, a resident of the Penn Hall Nursing Center Chambersburg, and formerly of Greencastle, passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2013 in the nursing center. She was born June 7th, 1920 in Washington DC, the daughter of the late Edward and Mabel (Sherlock) Scott. Betsy was a graduate of Eastern High School in Washington DC in 1938. She and her husband of over 70 years, Harry M Stephey Sr., were married in 1942 in the Granier Field Chapel in Manchester, New Hampshire. After traveling all 50 states in the U.S. and a third of the countries around the world, Harry and Betsy moved to Penn Hall Retirement Community in Chambersburg, PA, in 2000.
In her early life, Betsy was secretary to a bank president in Washington DC and an active member of the Job''s Daughters and the Masonic Eastern Star. Although she was a stay-at-home mom, raising her four sons, she found time to be active in the Methodist Church wherever the family lived. She volunteered at St. Joseph''s Hospital in St. Louis, caring for the mentally ill and addicted residents. She was also the manager of the St. Louis Field Office of the Central Methodist College in Independence MO. After moving to Greencastle, Betsy became secretary of HMS Enterprises, Inc until her retirement in 1990. She also was an active member of the Greencastle Homemakers.
Betsy was preceded in death by her brother Robert E. Scott, and sisters Marguerite Scott Nolan, Evelyn Scott Engel. She is survived by her husband Harry M Stephey Sr., Col. USAFR, and four sons: Harry M Stephey Jr. and his wife Eileen in Havertown, PA, Laurence E. Stephey and his wife Darlene in Fuquay-Varina NC, Gary S. Stephey and his wife Candy in Bracebridge Ontario, and David C. Stephey and his wife Beth in Chambersburg, 8 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at the Penn Hall Chapel Chambersburg on Saturday, January 19th at 11:00 A.M. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in the Cedar Hill Cemetery Greencastle.
