Betty B. Smith, age 97 of Carlisle, PA and formerly of Greencastle, PA, passed away on Wednesday, March 2, 2022, at Thornwald Nursing Home in Carlisle. Born December 15, 1924, in Greencastle, PA, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Anna Mae Myers Bryan.
Mrs. Smith was a 1942 graduate of the Greencastle-Antrim High School. She went on to work as an executive secretary at the former Fairchild Industries during WWII. She also worked as a reporter of the Public Opinion and then as the Greencastle High School Secretary to Mr. William Conrad for a number of years. She also assisted Mr. Conrad in transcribing and providing resource material for several historical books he wrote of the Greencastle area. Mrs. Smith was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir. She was also a member of the Senior Women’s Club and a former Den Mother for the Cub Scouts. She enjoyed flowers and canning vegetables and fruit from the garden. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, and supporting their activities.
Surviving are three sons, Ronald M. Smith (wife Susan) of Harrisburg, PA, Robert W. Smith (wife Dianne) of Chambersburg, PA, and Gerald L. Smith of Waynesboro, PA; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Wilma Walde of Colorado. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Mason Smith in 2008 and a sister, Leona Henson.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 22, 2022, at 10 AM in the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Inc., 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, PA, where Pastor Ryan Whisel will officiate. A luncheon will follow after the funeral service on Tuesday. The family will receive friends on Monday, March 21, 2022, from 6-8 and on Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the above funeral home and address. Interment will be 1:30 PM at Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown, MD. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to Thronwald Nursing Home, 442 Walnut Bottom Rd., Carlisle, PA 17013 or to the United Church of Christ Homes, Attn. Benevolent Fund, 30 N. 31st St., Camp Hill, PA 17011. If desired, you may wear a mask, but they are not required.
