Avelina Melad “Billy”Alexander, age 79, of Greencastle, PA, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at the York Hospital. Born in Cagayan Valley, Philippines, on December 26, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Marcos and Francisca S. Melad.
Mrs. Alexander earned the nickname “Billy” growing up in the Philippines as a “tomboy”. She earned her Bachelor of Education in the Philippines. Billy was a proud US citizen, valuing, and remembering the hard questions she studied to earn it. She worked as a custodian for the Greencastle-Antrim School District for over 30 years, where she will be remembered by many students. Billy was often found walking around Greencastle meeting and making new friends on her daily walks. She was a member of the Berean Bible Fellowship Church.
Surviving is her daughter, Rica Dyas (husband Lyhn) of Klamath Falls, OR and siblings, Celistine Kane (husband Brian) of Long Island, NY, Janet McKeehen of San Diego, CA, and Antonio Melad (wife Magdalena) of San Fernando, Pampanga, Philippines. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles T. Alexander in 2020 and siblings, Edwin, Edgar, and Marco S. Melad, Jr. and sister, Marie Melad.
A celebration on Billy’s life will be held on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at 4 PM in the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Inc., 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, PA, where Pastor Bruce Dick will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, 5051 Letterkenny Rd. West, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
