Arthur Robert Bitner Sr., age 93 of 4882 Salem Church Rd. Waynesboro, Pa. died at 12:20 P.M. Monday April 20, 2009 in the NMS Healthcare Center Hagerstown, Md. where he had been a resident since January. He had been in the care of his son since September 2007 and was in failing health the past year and critically ill for the past three months.
Born July 10, 1915 in Antrim Twp. Franklin Co. Pa., he was the son of the late Robert B. and Avis G. (Bell) Bitner.
He was a lifelong farmer having farmed since 1951 on Salem Church Rd. He also drove a school bus for the Waynesboro School District for 25 years.
Mr. Bitner was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Greencastle. He enjoyed reading the newspaper and helping out his friends and neighbors.
He and his wife, Anna Elizabeth (Foreman) Bitner were married August 12, 1935 in Hagerstown, Md. She died on December 9, 2007. He was the last of his immediate family.
Surviving family are a son, John E. Bitner, McConnellsburg, Pa., two daughters, Dorothy E. Boswell, Waynesboro, Pa. and Betty L. Bitner, Chambersburg, Pa., five grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by a son Arthur R. Bitner Jr., grandson Michael E. Boswell, brothers Walter "Pat" Bitner, Lewis K. Bitner, sisters Julia Green, Anna Jumper and Leah "Peg" Swisher.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday morning at 11:00 A.M. from the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle with Rev. Martin H. Horn officiating. Burial will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery Greencastle. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service on Thursday.
