Arnold B. "Arnie" Shafer, age 69 of 154 Salem Rd. Chambersburg, Pa. died unexpectedly at 9:36 A.M. Saturday February 9, 2008 in the emergency room of the Chambersburg Hospital.
Born March 12, 1938 in Cumberland, Md. he was the son of the late A. Burton and Louise H. (Martin) Shafer.
He retired after 22 years of service in the U.S. Navy having worked as an aviation electrician. He also worked 7 years at Grove Worldwide in Shady Grove Pa. and also 15 yrs. in civil service work.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War and was a member of the Harry D. Zeigler V.F.W. Post #6319 and a member the Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion Post #373, both of Greencastle, Pa.
Mr. Shafer was also a member of the Stillwater Historical Society in Stillwater N.J., a member of the Mount Pisgah Lodge #443 F. & A.M. of Greencastle and a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter #36 of Hagerstown, Md.
He was a 1956 graduate of Greencastle-Antrim High School, a graduate of the George Washington University and received his masters degree from Frostburg University. His hobbies and interests included computers, researching family history and genealogy, sport planes and his German shepherd dog.
He and his wife, Anita M. (Robinson) Shafer were married August 10, 1957 in Waynesboro, Pa.
Surviving family in addition to his wife of 50 years are:
Two daughters, Elaine Newman and Karen Ambrose, both of Virginia Beach Virginia
One son, Gregory Shafer of Camas, Washington
One sister, Doris L. (Mrs. Arlan) Martin of Hagerstown, Md.
Two Brothers, Carl R. Shafer of Huntsville, Tennessee and D. Bernard Shafer of Pioneer, Tennessee.
Seven Grandchildren and One great-grandson
Several nieces and nephews
A brother Allen W. Shafer died in 1972.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday February 13 at 11:00 A.M. from the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle, Pa. with Bishop Lynn C. Peiffer and Pastor Gary Zook officiating. Burial will be in the Browns Mill Cemetery Kauffman, Pa. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 7 - 9 P.M.
