Adam Meyer Byers, age 101 of 10180 Grindstone Hill Rd. Greencastle, PA, died at 1:55 P.M. Monday, May 30, 2011 at Quincy Home. He had been in declining health for about a month prior to his death.
Born Oct. 27, 1909, he was the only child of Joseph and Anna Mary (Meyer) Byers and lived most of his life on the Hades Church Rd.
Adam received a bachelor''s degree in education from Juniata College, Huntington and his master''s degree at Penn State. He was a history teacher and later a librarian. He taught at such facilities as Niagara Christian College in Canada, Messiah College and the Greencastle - Antrim School district. He was active in Clay Hill School Reunions. Until recently, Adam was active at his church, Five Forks Brethren in Christ, in Waynesboro. He supported many charitable organizations, including Brethren in Christ missions, Back to the Bible and the 700 Club. Adam enjoyed reading and identifying various local birds and their habitats.
Adam was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Heisey Byers. He is survived by Anna Mary Reiff, husband Dennis; Martha E. Byers; Joseph H. Byers, wife Kay; James A. Byers, wife Laura; John V. Byers. Adam had 9 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. One grandchild, Nathan A. Byers, preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held on Friday morning, June 3rd at 10:00 A.M. from the Five Forks Brethren in Christ Church 9244 Five Forks Rd. Waynesboro, PA with Rev. Wilbur Besecker officiating. Burial will be in the old Antrim Church Cemetery near Greencastle. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening, June 2nd from 6 - 8 P.M. at the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, PA. Memorial contributions can be made in Adam''s memory to the Five Forks Brethren in Christ Church, 9244 Five Forks Rd., Waynesboro, PA 17268.
