Nancy Mae Comer Boward Layton, age 78, of Greencastle, PA, passed away on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at Mercy House in Chambersburg, PA. Born in Fountain Green, MD on January 2, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Odis Gentry and Elenora M. Jones Comer, Sr.
Mrs. Layton was a 1964 graduate of Neshaminy High School and had attended Greensboro College in Greensboro, NC. She worked in Customer Service for Verizon, retiring in 1994, after 30 years of service. In retirement, Nancy held several part time jobs to include delivering newspapers, working at Travel Centers of America in Greencastle and at the former Food Lion in Greencastle. Nancy enjoyed volunteering at The Open Door Church, where she was a member; participating in her children and grandchildren’s activities, bowling, going to concerts, organizing, and she cherished family and family functions. Nancy was known as a strong, hardworking, and dedicated mother by her children and a positive spirit that always greeted you with a smile.
Surviving is her husband, Dale “Doc” Layton, whom she married on January 10, 1994; two sons, Jamie Boward (Sarah) of Chambersburg, PA and Ricky Boward (Ashleigh) of Charlotte, NC; five grandchildren, Ryder, Nora, Emma, Britton, and Camden Boward; four siblings, Stephen L. Comer (Marsha), Barbara L. Hafer (Jeff), Cheryl A. Smith (Jeff), and Chip G. Comer (Paula Dassing); and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, George Richard Comer.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at 10:30 AM at The Open Door Church, 600 Miller St., Chambersburg, PA, where Pastors Mike Sanders and Carl McKee will officiate. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6 – 8 PM at the above church and address as well as one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Interment will follow the service in Parklawns Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Inc., Chambersburg, PA. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in her name to the Mercy House, 730 Norland Ave., Chambersburg, PA 17201.
