Joyce Ann (Pensinger) "Penny" Berger, 83, of Chambersburg, PA, formerly of Greencastle, PA, passed away on March 17, 2024, at Menno Haven in Chambersburg, PA. She was born on June 16, 1940, in Chambersburg, PA, to the late Harold B. Pensinger and Helen (Angle) Pensinger.
Joyce, known to many as "Penny," was an avid reader who enjoyed family gatherings and traveling. She explored 48 states and many countries by car, ship, rail, and air. Joyce had a fulfilling career as a physical education teacher at Waynesboro High School and Greencastle-Antrim High School, as well as serving as a substitute teacher. She also worked at CNB Bank, Susquehanna Bank, and the Greencastle Borough office. Joyce was actively involved in various community organizations, including being a PIAA swimming and diving official, volunteering for Moss Spring Swim Club, Waynesboro YMCA, Chambersburg YMCA, and participating in Old Home Week activities. She was also a dedicated member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Greencastle, PA, where she worshipped.
In her personal life, Joyce was a loving wife of 62 years to Donald R. Berger and a devoted mother to her children: Kandee Spain of Greensboro, NC, Steven Berger (Kathy) of Fisherville, VA, and Scott Berger (partner Teri Aunspach-Wert) of Harrisburg, PA. She was cherished by her grandchildren, Kelsey Spain and Joshua Spain of Greensboro, NC, as well as several nieces and nephews in PA, VA, and CO. Joyce is also survived by her step-brother Jon (Valerie) Pensinger of Greencastle, PA. She was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law Catherine (Leonardi) Berger of Harrisburg, PA, and son-in-law James M. Spain of Greensboro, NC.
Joyce's life will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on March 22, 2024, at Trinity Lutheran Church at 1186 Jason Drive, Greencastle, PA, 17225, with a private burial at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Greencastle, PA, prior to the service. A visitation and reception will immediately follow the service. Contributions in Joyce's memory may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church at the above address. The Harold M Zimmerman & Son Funeral Home in Greencastle, PA, is assisting the family with the arrangements.
